10 More Wordpress Plugins I Can’t Live Without

top 10 wordpress plugins

by Patrick Toerner on March 31, 2010

While using Wordpress, I come across some nifty plugins, and I always think to myself, I wish I included that one in my Top 10 Wordpress Plugins post.  So I decided to make a follow-up.  Here are 10 more awesome Wordpress plugins.

1. After the Deadline

This has got to be my new favorite plugin.  It is basically spell check on steroids.  When you are done writing, hit the button, and it analyzes your text.  It catches a lot!  I wouldn’t write another blog post without this little baby.

2. CommentLuv

This plugin is the only reason anyone comments on my blog :)   Maybe this is a half truth, but whatever, it helped build a little community and helped me get to know other bloggers.  I am all for it!  If you don’t know what it is, while commenting it searches the commentators blog and finds their most recent posts.  Then after they post it displays the recent post under their comment.

3. Comment Reply Notification

This plugin does exactly what you think it would.  When someone replies to a users comment, it emails them notifying them.  I personally love when I comment on a blog and get this email.  I comment on a lot of blogs and it is hard for me to go back and check if someone replied.  Try this plugin out if you haven’t heard of it!

4. Javascript to Footer

This one is kind of boring, but it puts all of the javascript on your site to the bottom of your page so it is last to load.  Wordpress and all of my plugins have a lot of js files.  I think my homepage had 15 or something when I checked.  This plugin shaved about second on my load time, that’s huge!

5. Insights

This plugin puts the awesome box below underneath your post editing screen.  From that little box, you can search all over the web, including images, videos, Wikipedia, Google, Google News, Google Blogs, a book search, and best of all search through your own blog (which makes it really easy to interlink).

6. Wordpress Stats

I can’t believe I didn’t put this in my first version!  I had to look back to make sure it wasn’t there.  Wordpress stats is like Google analytics except only the information a blogger would be interested in.  It tracks page views, referring sites, what people click to exit your site, and search terms that got people to your site.  It is great to have, but becomes addicting to look at.

7. Top Commentators Widget

Hey, you got to love your commentators.  This widget gives your best commentators a dofollow link to their site.  Just another way to facilitate commenting. Personally, I like to comment on blogs with this plugin more often, i don’t know maybe it is just me :)

8. Popular Posts

Give you a simple widget where you can display your most popular posts.  It is very easy to customize, I was even able to put thumbnails next to the posts with a little bit of coding.  It really boosts page views, check it out!

9. Sexy Bookmarks

Scroll down a little bit and you can see just how sexy those bookmarks are!  These work pretty well because the headline right before them, it must catch peoples attention a little bit.  Also these have almost become the standard, so people recognize these if they are looking to socially bookmark your page.

10. Organize Series

This is a little known plugin that helps you create series of posts.  It actually adds a new taxonomy (like category and tags) called series.  It then links all the posts of the series together and provides easy navigation between them.  It has way more features than this, but they don’t all work with the Thesis Theme.

Anyways, that is my second Top 10 Wordpress Plugins List.  Got any better ones?

Patrick,

I will definitely have to check out #1, #4 and #10. It’s always fun to see what other bloggers are using (& using effectively).

Thanks for the nice list of WordPress plugins!

Yeah I just installed insights, it is a great plugin. Probably saved me 10 minutes writing this post alone. Thanks for reading!

Hi,
This is really a great list, I will immediately install after the deadline and insights plugin, also, i couldn’t figure out how to use wordpress.com stats, it was just disturbing me with the API thing.
Thanks

Yeah the API got me for a little bit too. If you have akismet installed an working, it is the same API key. Basically go to wordpress.com and sign up. You will get an API key, and that is what you put into the field.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply, I entered the API but it is telling me to associate my blog with the API, it is also not displaying any stats. I will have to try again.
Thanks.

Love the phrase “spell check on steroids”. We all need that. There’s nothing worse than posting and seeing a typo a week later. ARG… My biggest problems are when my typo is still a word, so of course, it misses it. Like buy and but. Not good.

I like the insights as well. That sounds like a nifty program for searching images. That’s always a pain, inserting images and video, which is why I believe most don’t do it.

Yeah those are probably my two favorite up there. Insights is great! The main this I use it for is interlinking, but now that you mention it, it does make inserting images really easy. I think I will do that more often.

I totally missed that line about interlinking. Now that’s awesome! Interlinking is how I get all my keywords to show up in Google. Great stuff.

Haha Alex, I know how you feel. If plugins didn’t slow down your blog, I am sure I would have over 100 of them.

I try to tone down the use of plugins, as they tend to eat a lot of cache.
But I have to admit I can not, and I seriously mean that, I can not leave without Wordpress statistics – this little plugin is the energy source of my blog life.

I love Wordpress Stats too! I was just thinking how, I try really hard to beat my last highest page views, and this fuels me to build my blog without me even knowing.

There must be nicotine in WP Stats. I am on it way too much. I actually just leave a tab open with WP Stats and hit refresh. That shit is badddd

Great set of plugins Patrick.

Everytime I want to start writing a list of plugins as a post topic, I always seem to find better ones along the way! Lol

Plugins are great but if you can find a way to add the code instead, even better! :)

Very true, I try to stay away from little plugins that I can add in myself. Plugins are awesome, but they sure do slow down your blog at times.

Hi Patrhick, I think it’s nice to visit CommentLuv enabled blogs like this one. It’s my first visit and I really like the blog, so seeing CommentLuv here is the icing on the cake.

I’m also a fan of Top commentator widget. The comment section is were all the interaction takes place and it’s a good thing to reward those that engage with you the most.

Thanks for the tips.
