I Got Banned From Google Adwords

by Patrick Toerner on January 28, 2010

Banned Books Week 2008
Yes, like thousands and thousands of other internet marketers out there, I was banned from Google Adwords… for life!

When I first got the cookie cutter, you have been banned email from Google, I was like WTF? I really couldn’t understand it. I mean, when I first got into affiliate marketing I used some shady tactics but I got my warning and stopped all that. Then out of the blue, I get banned. I wasn’t even running any ads except for a tutoring business.

So I did some digging. It seems that my old campaigns were just paused and not deleted. And apparently Google treats paused campaigns as active campaigns when seeing if they should ban you or not. Bummer.

After I was banned from Google, I looked at advertising with Yahoo and Bing. I found that I would get approximate 1/5 the traffic for roughly the same cost per click. So I would be doing the same amount of work and receiving 1/5 the traffic.

So I have two options now, switch to strictly organic traffic, or use another credit card and name.

Anyways, this was sort of just a rant on the mass algorithmic banning Google just did. I hope it didn’t affect any of you.

Can’t you send them an e-mail to reverse it? I know it’s probably a hassle of a process but if it gets overturned then it’d be worth it especially since you’re getting 1/5 of the traffic you would’ve been getting.

And out of curiosity, are you banned from Google Adsense too or just Adwords?

Um… you can ignore that last question as I see Google Adsense ads on the sidebar… UNLESS you’re using someone’s elses’ name now. :D

Yup, I still have Adsense. And actually I did send them an email and got some canned response saying that they reviewed my account and stand by their decision. No big deal, I will just have to create a company and use Adwords under that name.

Bummer about your account, I hear that a LOT of people got slapped pretty hard with the latest round… I’m lucky, I guess, in the sense that I deleted a bunch of direct linking campaigns late last year because they weren’t giving me a solid return. I still have my account, but I’m not using it, so I guess it’s the same as not having one.

I’m strictly running on organic traffic on all of my sites now. On one hand it sucks knowing that you can’t just “flip a switch” and send tons of visitors your direction, but on the other hand it’s nice knowing that my traffic won’t drop to zero when I flip the switch off.

Also, I love you blog! I just found it by following a link on Moon’s Experiments In Passive Income. It’s a great site you’ve got here :)

Yeah, I’ve switched to all organic. The free part is nice, but the building traffic part isn’t quite so nice. From the name of your site, clearly I need to be reading that!

I’m glad you like my blog! Thanks for reading :)

I think you should look at your Adwords ban as a blessing! Google has just become so convoluted with it, I think the time and energy is better invested into SEO than getting a PPC campaign that works. As soon as you have something profitable, they’ll just change the rules and slap you for it anyway.
